Tips from Cowboy Moving & Storage

Moving can be an exciting new chapter, but for children, it can also be overwhelming and emotional—especially if they’re leaving behind familiar places, friends and routines. Whether you’re moving to a new house, townhome, condo or apartment in Colorado, Cowboy Moving & Storage is here to help make the transition smoother—for every member of the family.

Here’s how you can prepare your children for the move, keep them involved, manage the big day and reduce everyone’s stress along the way.

1. Start with Honest, Age-Appropriate Conversations

Children thrive on routine and familiarity, so change can feel scary. That’s why it’s important to talk about the move as early as possible.

  • Explain the reason for the move in simple, honest terms. “We’re moving to be closer to Grandma,” or “We found a house with a bigger yard.”

  • Be positive about the new home, school and neighborhood—even if you're feeling nervous yourself.

  • Allow them to ask questions and share their feelings. Acknowledge their worries and reassure them that it’s okay to feel uncertain.

2. Involve Your Kids in the Process

Letting children take part in the move gives them a sense of control and helps them feel more excited than anxious.

  • Let them help pack their toys, books, or clothing.

  • Create a “special box” they can decorate and keep with them during the move—this can hold their favorite items, like a stuffed animal or game.

  • Show them pictures of the new home or neighborhood and plan visits if it’s not too far.

  • Older kids might enjoy helping plan their new room layout or picking new décor.

3. Keep Moving Day Kid-Friendly

Moving day is busy, and it can be overwhelming for little ones. Here’s how to make it smoother:

  • Arrange childcare for young children or toddlers if possible. It keeps them safe and allows you to focus on logistics.

  • If they’re staying with you, give them simple “jobs” to feel included—like checking off boxes on a moving list or handing out snacks.

  • Keep their essentials handy—pack a backpack with favorite toys, snacks, a change of clothes and anything that brings comfort.

4. Reduce Stress with Routine and Reassurance

During and after the move, keeping a sense of routine helps children adjust faster.

  • Stick to regular mealtimes and bedtimes as much as possible.

  • Unpack their rooms first so they feel grounded in the new space.

  • Plan something fun soon after the move—a walk around the new neighborhood, a pizza night in, or a playdate.

  • Remind them that it takes time to feel “at home,” and you’re all in it together.
