Many senior citizens make the decision to downsize to a smaller home or independent living facility because they just don’t want to have to bother with all the maintenance and headaches that come with a larger home. It’s actually a very freeing experience to get rid of items you no longer need or use. However, moving when you’re older can be a little more challenging. The moving experts at Cowboy Moving & Storage put together this list of moving tips for seniors that should make your moving experience less stressful.
Begin organizing your move as soon as possible. Packing and getting ready for a move takes a lot longer than you think. As soon as you make the decision to move, get organized and start packing.
Start with a floor plan of your new space. It’s helpful to use this to determine what furniture you will keep and what furniture is just too large for the size of your smaller home, condo, townhome or apartment. You don’t want to pay to move furniture that just won’t fit into your new home. A floor plan makes it easier for you to decide what to bring and what to sell or give away.
Pack up one room at a time. It’s not as overwhelming if you just deal with one room at a time. It’s also easier to pack your items and label the boxes based on where they will go in your new place. Be sure to have three boxes in each room as you pack: one marked for donations to charity, one for items for family members and one for trash.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your friends and family will probably be pleased to help, if you just let them know what you need. You also might choose to have your movers professionally pack up your possessions, once you’ve decided what to take with you.
Choose a reputable moving company. There are many fly-by-night movers out there who will try to take advantage of you. Select a mover with a great reputation and a history of excellent customer service, like Cowboy Moving & Storage. We’ve been helping seniors, commercial enterprises and families with all of their moving needs since 1968 and we’d love to help you. Call 303-789-2200 for your free estimate today.
